Because the DJs don't produce the beats in most cases and instead just play them... the emcees are performing their own material...

i agree with what mr sheers said at the end of the day there isnt that many hip hop djs that make and perform there own stuff where as when an mc is performing they are exclusivly performing there own material where as a dj will just mix up other peeps tunes to make a set.
