*edit: Arsenal/Tottenham rivalry
I think smokey was just pointing out that Spurs arent in europe next year.
Part of this is because Arsenal came one place above them in the Premiership, Spurs lost their last game of the season because of food poisoning :waaaaa:

Spurs came fifth which is a uefa cup spot, a vast improvement on last year.
Arsenal Qualify for the Qualifying rounds of CL as they cam 4th. Their worst season for years.
Next year we overtake

lol, we're such girls :badteeth:
In the premiership the top four teams qualify for the champions league.
Arsenal came 4th and Spurs 5th - it would have been the other way around apart from tottenahm lost the last game of the season.
So *if* spurs came 4th and Arsenal had lost last night as they did, Arsenal wouldnt be in Europe next year...
Outside the premiership you can only qualify if you win the Champions league. Liverpool last year finished 5th I think but because they won it they qualfied automatically.

only the top 4 teams in the league go into the chapions league the next season, tottenham were above Arsenal most of the season untill the last game when we won & they lost meaning we finished 4th & spurs finished 5th so they go into the cup where they get to play teams no one has ever heard of & probably still lose :badteeth:

Well everton were going to go through, but because of this situation, the law was changed so that the winner goes through and fourth would have gone into uefa instead.
Its not important, the table doesnt lie. Arse deserved fourth.

fair enough at home but in europe it always seems silly to chose to support the non home team....

What we've achieved in the CL this season has been nothing short of monumental
Holding Barca for 75 mins at 1-0 is no mean feat, but when you consider that we were doing it with 10 men then the accomplishment should be congratulated
I look forward to next season's Champions League with relish - perhaps more than the prospect of watching Spurs flounder in the mickey-mouse tournament which is the UEFA cup

I will admit at the time, we were not hot, but he was. HE saw out his contract and defected for free, leaving us a vast sum out of pocket.
The same as Henry staying for his final year saying he will stay and then leaving for free at the end of the contract. Thus losing arse 25 mill or so on a transfer.
He also left as it is a well know fact he drives the other 'bus' and we will not tolerate that, it puts everyones backs to the wall.
I will even sing for theo and I will support him all the way. But I dont agree he should be there.
Kind of like supporting the army in Iraq, its not their fault they are going

I agree, all this Yiddo talk of Arsenal's worse season for years and Tottenham taking over is bollocks, considering Wenger has basically remodelled the squad and filled it with young players. This was pretty much their first year with those guys so if anything they'll get better as time goes on...
The final was gutting, i still remember the Real Zaragoza match from years ago and to lose in the final again was shit. I'm still pleased they made it that far though and thought they played with a lot of spirit last night...

My Grandad was the announcer at spurs many years ago, and he was taken by my great grandad. Then they took my dad who took me. Id call that a bigger connection than most.
Barcelona and Hearts play and have always had the 'play good football ethic' West Brom were the side I decided to support locally when I arrived.

I support utd cos growing up all of my cousins would have posters of Dennis Irwin, Steve Bruce and Cantona on their walls, I went with what I knew. Been to Old Trafford once and seen Utd in London three times. I'm not the most die hard of fans but I'd make the effort when I can be arsed.
Just seems like a lot of people one day wake up and decide to support a team with very minor associations to themselves. Barcelona play great football, have some vague link with my home club, and are doing pretty well this year. I know I'll support them too. A bit suss no?

so madz when did you start supporting man u
I have SUPPORTED spurs since 1981
I have followed the fortunes of
Hearts the same due to my old footy mags
Barcelona since lineker and venables era 1990
west Brom since I moved to brum as I like to watch a match
I have a great interest in football, I doubt you could even name the two managers before alex ferguson without using the internet!
Fair play for having a go though.
:badteeth:
you know way more about football than me Ric, I already said i dont know everything about the club - I was just saying that 4 teams is a bit much! At least they are not in the same league cos that would def be wrong.
I used to have a season ticket at vicarage road when I was in sixth form, watford are like my second team but now I hardly know more than where they are in the table and what matches they win, so with this in mind I dont think I can get away with saying I follow them.
Fad to me is something that is a phase. People that support teams until they stop playing well would be one instance. It wasnt specifically aimed at you with Spurs. maybe Barca though ;) That is why i think some kind of home connection usually helps cos whats to say when you dont like a certain team anymore youre not gonna change to one thats playing better.
If utd went into the first division (I know I can say that and its unlikely), but they would still be who I support. Not sure if that would be the same for a few people on here if their teams got relegated.....

We haven't met but I know who you are. You work with youth yeah?
The bit in bold actually made me laugh. You are so clearly deluded. And for that reason, any more homophobic comments from yourself will just make me feel sorry for you.
:)
Shut up, talk football.

but you supported man u coz your cousins had posters on the walls lol
That is a fad if ever i saw one!!!!
As much as i deteste defending madz, i started supporting liverpool because one of my cousins gave me a liverpool kit that they had grown out of when i was about 8 or something, crown paints stylee a run.
We all get into football and our respective teams in different ways and i think that madz's is pretty legitimate really.

duh, she was the one saying that people should support teams for legitimate reasons and i was saying you shouldnt have to have bloody reason, you should support who you want!!
i was merely pointing out her hypocrisy

Iv had quite a faddy attitude to teams in the past, i used to support liverpool as a kid because i wanted to go up anfield with my cousins who supported them - I came to prefer chelsea later on because my stepdad and subsequently the rest of my family supported them, and also because they were/are just a far more exciting team.
if it comes down to local teams (and i think everyones entitled to have a local team as well as a 'first' team) I would choose Reading over Oxford, not just because Reading are now premiership and Oxford are now shite, but because Abingdon used to be in Berkshire and many true abingdoners still have those loyalties !
so my list of teams goes roughly
1. chelsea
2. reading
3. abingdon united fc (because i work there!)
so when chelsea play reading the allegiance will still be firmly chelsea, but in the unlikely event that abingdon united played either of them - it would be home town loyalties all the way (except at the bookies, for obvious reasons)
to be honest i dont see why people get wound up over 'glory supporting', its just taking football waaaaaaay to seriously !!!!

Damn straight Bryn, all about being real to yourself when supporting a football team. Even if my team went into the Conference I would still stick by them through and through. I'd rather take shit for supporting someone crap who have been my life long local team like Coventry than try and jump on the bandwagon once a team anywhere in England starts to do well.
If people didn't support teams just because they are succesful (often based on some made up weak ass family connection) then the lower division sides wouldn't be in so much trouble trying to stay afloat.
This is an Oxford based forum right? I know people have migrated here from London and the like but I reckon it would be interesting to see what teams people support. I bet there are more Arsenal, Liverpool, Man Utd and Chelsea fans than any of the other English teams put together...

So becasue my family and father took me to my first games at white hart lane i shouldnt support them......
BOLLOX
Its a known fact that teams stay in families, and Im sure if ever you have kids, moved away took him to Coventry, he would still follow that club as would you.
On your point of local team and supporting them, as I cant get to WHL each week if I want to watch a game then I goto west brom. Because I like football but I think villa and blues have enough money and support. I know a number of others who do a similar thing
Whats wrong with that.
I goto spurs 3/4 times a season and catch them everytime they are in the midlands.
