Excuse my ignorance, am I to assume you're on about a large venue being built in Oxford that's going to be available for massive raves? This is news to me, but great news all the same!
What will be its primary purpose? With a name like the Carling Academy it sounds like a centre for people that want to become raging alcoholics but aren't yet hardcore enough, so they join this academy where the training envoles being forcefed grotty Carling until their guts turn to shit and they shit out their guts and then drink them, repeating the cycle until the whites of their eyes turn brown. I could be wrong...
Don't tell me it's another breeding ground for hooliganism!!

the zodiac's being turned into a carling academy for big raves an' ting. well, not just big raves but you know what I mean. They've got carling academy's in Brixton and Bristol aswell. They're knocking through the tile shop next door so its gonna be pretty large. just what oxford needs i reckon!

I had a suspicion it may have been a plan to bulid a massive footie academy, so I am somewhat relieved to have you put me straight.
Sounds like it's gonna be fat then. Would also like to see Prodigy there.
In fact, I don't think my brain can handle actually seeing prodigy live, it might implode or turn into lionshit on the first noise. Wheeeee!

with a large capacity like that you can probably get silly line ups & then charge £15
i'm quite interested in what it will bring outside DNB though

Yea if you check wegottickets.co.uk you can see dates and prices for the Carling Academy. First one listed is 11quid, but some events are priced at over 20quid. Unfortunately my lack of knowledge about bands means I don't know how much zodiac would have charged, but I'd like to bet it's half the price!

I hope this doesn't turn out to be a loss for us, the raving diaspora, but in this world of ever-increasing materialism, we're probably gonna be paying £20 too. If you want to come round my house and listen to tunes in my bedroom I'll only charge you a fiver though - bargain or what. We are talking laptop with onboard speakers too, proper wicked and bad system seen.

Im sure there'll be a wide range of promotions there, you'll get the big raves with 30 dj';s and 30 mc's which will cost £20 but hopefully there'll be slightly smaller nights...

yeah but to be fair the zodiac stunk of piss, had a weak system and quite alot of the nights were only half full.
turnin it into a carling academy can only be a good thing imo.

I'm excited to see this arriving but sad about the Zodiac - let's hope the extortionate prices bring something fresh and interesting - if not, I will be pissed off - be interested to see what knid of place it will be.

From the oxford times
"...a new main venue, capable of holding 900 people, to be renamed The Carling Academy Oxford. The Zodiac's name will live on, though - giving its name to a smaller 436-person upstairs venue, which will host new bands.
advertisement
The third element will be a stand-alone bar and club, to be called Bar Academy, which will hold 280 people. "

i wont be charging £20 for any nights lol except for when i do my andy h solo 6 hour cheese set)
you will find to start with that there will prob be one promoter downstairs and another one upstairs in the smaller room with boogie basement in the bar ( this is for fridays )
i personally dont have 5 - 8 grand to risk on a lineup so dont expect anything silly to we know how things are running.....
when the whole club is open the main room is about 650 capacity upstairs 430 plus bar room
all good though... got some big names lined up, some you will like some you will diss but its about getting people through the door :-)

seems to be the problem with big chain venues - essentially it is about how much money you make
all sounds good if its going to cater for different tastes, lets hope they will have some liquid dnb even though it obv wont pull as many people as more commercial dnb acts

"Well I completely agree with getting numbers through the door but this could be a wicked opportunity to get some DNB nights with artists that pull from outside oxford while still keeping it as a big night
I think a nice mix of obvious choice pullers & some very carefully picked artists from maybe overseas to give the dnb nights that fresh & exciting feel rather than your typical Zinc, Hype, Andy C etc because although that'd be fat, just not overly interesting.
Guidance in Bournemouth is a good example. Andy C plus Calyx & Teebee. You get people out of town thinking about going because you don;t see these artists very often & these aren't just small artists either that won't pull. (this is opinion, i am not a promoter so my views are views only & i could be wrong however I just am very excited about the opportunity oxford has to get dnb on the map in oxford!!!!)"
