I think thats the problem with england, too many of the 'experienced' players think they're above the team. He's got everything to prove, just moved to the prem so he's hungry to play well. Not only that he's a decent bread & butter goal scorer as well as decent play maker, whats england's been missing.

Give him a shot I rekon. My first choice over crouch, owen or defoe atm, say what you will.

Thats a team playing to all our teams strengths, who are attack minded but can all have a hard work rate and know there defensive duties.

It easily switches from 4-5-1 to 4-3-3 to 4-4-2 and most importantly everyone is playing in a position they are used too

Crouches scoring record for England is immense. He can hold a ball up for loads to support, or get on the back of a big Beckham or Carrick Ball. Or a JOe COle or SWP cross. The rest of the team are goal scorers also.

I would have a clue who else to put in as centre back cover Carragher if we could persuade him.

I can't wait to see how our new lad Nugent is gonna do this season....I really reckon once he finds his feet at the top level he'll be banging them in for us left right and centre.

We need fresh legs and young lads who want to prove themselves - not poor sods like Carragher who was never given a chance getting begged to play for us...I mean what sort of managing is that? In international football you need to stretch the defence.

You cannot have a group of players that like to drop off, it never works, you have to have someone sitting on the last man.

Without a fit Owen I would be inclined to play the following team:

Either way the starting line is never going to look that impressive, I just think this team gives the most balance and having Carrick in the holding role would allow Gerrad and Cole to be more creative. I'd also give strick instructions to Beckham to hug the touchline and NOT come in looking for the ball, every time he does that the team loses it's shape and I'd rather have him on the wing getting balls into the box.
