Eminem IMO, listening to the slimshady lp b2b marshall mathers, forget how good he was. Genius, only lyrics i would label genius in the rap/mcing scene are his.
No one before or since has had lyrics that hit me like his, plus u got Infinite which proves he could write lyrics that aren't offensive and are still sick.
Shame he fell off so badly, Eminem show was average, the rest was awful.

Haha, couldn't resist, Pharoahe Monch (minus embarrassing shit like Body Baby) has a better flow than Eminem (although i'm not saying he's shit, he can kill it on occassion too) and much better lyrics.
I'd put Kool G Rap very highly up the list too....

You can judge an MC on any number of attributes:
Complexity of lyrics
Cleverness of punchlines
Flow
Cadence
Voice
etc etc
From the options posted so far it's clear that some people are just naming their favourites.
I agree with a few people on this thread. Jake for naming Monche and G Rap, Roscoe for naming Big L and Kane, Mant for chucking Doom into the mix and Euan because he's right, Plan B is clearly a homo.
My opinion would probably vary depending on when you asked me and what it was being judged on. Basically I would take Jake and Roscoe's picks I reckon. If it was for pure nonsense I would add Ghostface coz nobody spits a nonsense verse like him. As a side note I thought there was supposed to be a Ghostface/Doom album, anyone know if it is coming out?

Haha, sorry, i just think of Rise etc... as extremely average backpack rap with some cool punchlines but not enough charisma to stand out as any more. I do think Pep Love is kind of rubbish, along with his album, and that while RA is good, he is kind of a one trick pony with his "hibberdeebibberdee" stuff (check his album, it's pretty dull with the odd flames track).
Just personal preference though, i can see the appeal, they just wouldn't be anywhere near the top of any list based on any criteria for me though...
evolucian

we'll just have to disagree on Pep Love! i think he's got incredible flow.
I don't really get what your saying with Rise either, backpacker? is that the type of person who listens or who he is? (i listen to who i like regardless of stereotype given to the listener), and when you say charisma, how do you mean? cos he's not shouty shouty? he's got shit loads of charisma in the delivery.
You also make me beg the question, are we talking about who has the most ability, or are we judging the entire catalogue?
If your saying nah to RA cos some of the tracks on his album aren't all that, then you have to apply that to all the other rappers you've mentioned, which is a bit cynical Jake, and the people you've cited may suffer under the same scrutiny! I find that kind of critique kinda kills the love!
PS Grande my favourite emcees (i hope) wouldnt be shit lyristist!

PS Grande my favourite emcees (i hope) wouldnt be shit lyristist!
With Rise, it's not about him or his listener, to me backpacker is a genre, i'm not using it to criticise anything in particular as i like loads of music of that type. Because of that though i've heard a million emcees like Rise, i remember back in the Rawkus days there seemed to be emcees like him releasing 12"s every week and they all got lost amongst each other. Charisma doesn't mean shouty shouty (don't understand how you got there), see Pharoahe Monche on the top of my list as an example, it just means something that makes them engaging to listen to. I don't get that with Rise et al...
I'm not judging a whole catalogue either, but i would expect someone who is a potential for best emcee to have a fair amount of classic tunes under their belt (the ability to actually make good songs is part of what makes emcees good to me, hence why Canibus is utter shit) and so with RA's album i was highlighting how i don't think he does other than the odd track...
That's why i only mentioned two strictly, rather than add in people who are lacking in some areas like Elzhi, Lil Fame and Supastition...

Jehst is brilliant, KRS is briliant, DMX is ace but some of his flows are bit shabby, Eminem's good when he's good (which is very often). Personally I like the nasal-sounding guy from foreign beggars with the perverse name I cant be assed to google for, makes me laugh, not sure if he's up there with the aformentioned dons though.

time tells the story, and only the dopest ones from that Rawkus era your talking about have survived, the games changed, and obviously people have their own preference for sub genres, or artists from varying subgenres.
Be interesting to break down the skills sets and sub genres and say who the best was in each disapline.

Twisted lyrics, love it.
So, can u recommend any other rappers with twisted lyrics?

twisted lyrics put a warped image in my mind:
"I light a candle and place it up on the mantle, grab a knife at the blade and stab you with the fucking handle"
Now that puts a twisted image in my head.

Em and Dre beat criticisms are weird, because neither of them technically produce. Eminem stands in a room, hums a melody and says what he wants and his studio gimps create it, occassionally he'll have a go at programming the drums but i've heard he sometimes is pretty hands off with that too.
Dre's production team is famous, most of his famous recent beats weren't done by him, Lord Finesse had a good interview where he explained it (he was part of his production team at one point), he's more like an old school definition of a producer...
And i still stand by Canibus and his intellectually deficient "super scientific" rhymes being shit...

Bet it's something to do with being unable to "relate" to the music, a lot of people strangely seem to need that to enjoy music.
No, I bet its him taking the piss and he's manage to hook line and sinker 4 of you :upsidedownsmoke23:
Though I can see some seriousness in his comment too. I can honestly say that growing up in Newbury I listened to hip hop and hip hop alone and me and my friends were treated as outcasts and lepers.
