View Full Version : Define "Clownstep"

Ok.

I've been given impressions on what it actually is but it seems a lot of people's views on what it actually is are different.

Please define the term for me because quite a few different people all over th net I think get the wrong impression by it.

very good point mate. everyones go ttheir own views on whats what!

i dont like the name clownstep anyway - thats a harsh description for a dancefloor tune!!!! I always thought it had the bodyrockbeat and a different variation of the same sorta bassline noise. (like a lot of the releases this year on formation)

Not to be confused with (my interpretation!) of jump up which is any other dancefloor track which actually sounds more original than the clownstep and not the same sorta beat.

However ppl keep telling me jump up IS clownstep which i wont accept! Jump up tunes dont all sound the same...but i think we could argue about that all day. For now i'll accept im on my own with my views lol.

Jump up is not clownstep - plus the whole thnig about this style that style is gay.

clownstep tunes....

anything by distorted minds [well the stuff i have heard so far]
most new dillinja [allthough he has taken heed recently and his new stuff sounds promising]
the new pendulum thing... god it's awful

to me i class clownstep as basic cheese by numbers aimed at the younger mass "rave" market..

the problem is this...

most "clownstep" releases will do at least 5,000>10,000 units.. that is a lot of sales in d&b so producers will make it so they can pay their bills and drive nice cars ect..

nu jump up is NOT clown step.. there is alot of great dance floor action out there.... "don't tell me" for example.

it's just time producers spent times pushing things forward rather than loading up the same old beats/bassline..

ClownStep is stuff By Twisted,Distorted minds most clipz stuff. Twisted started the sound & people "jumped on the bandwagon" T - 10 is a classic example of clownstep and all the tunes that sound like that.

Dillinja doesn't write ClownStep.

This is why I made this thread because although I thought I knew what it was I was not certain I had done what most people have done and just heard people's views !!

I originally just imagined it would be swingbeat stuff obviously because clownstep sounds like it should be referring to that.

dude i would personally class things like torpedos cheese too, but then again i'm a cynical purist!

MIKEE HUSSLA

Torpedo I could never really class as cheese cos when I first heard it and still now it's fucking bass heavy and very dark !! Ok maybe not dark as in Tech Itch for example but has loads of energy and power in the tune and not sure what element you could class as cheese ??

Manikular
23rd September 2003, 09:51 AM
well i like the dark edgey stuff.. imagine a soundscape to a horror movie.. stuff that adds to the scaredness

some "dark" stuff is just noise. alot of the early no-turn bits were as scary as hell!!

heh.

mistical dub isn't dark or popular but it aint clownstep...

the only cheesey bit of torpedos is the intro. and maybe the vocal... but i like the vocal.. i also like the way that dj hype can never mix this record.

lol i was just bein sarcastic - at the end of the day there is no way every tunes gonna be classed the same by everyone.

every genre has its thing

in house music you darent say the word funky else you get a three page lecture on it. (even if its funky lol)

d&b is full of silly genres... it will get to a point where every producer has there own genre.... what does make me laugh is this..

people slag dillinja off as all his stuff sounds the same...

yet bristol gets bigged up nuff and *most* of that soundds the same..

same with good looking recordings...

same with loadsa other producers..

just the way things are...

isn't it cool when you here a new tune and you are like yup that is ************

i usually guess a keaton track becuase of the drums
i usually guess a john b due to the arrangement and the strings

i think it's cool that a producer has their own sound... although it's about time dillinja got some new drums hehehehe...

doa is certainly a forum of geeks... but it is also the forum with the most "headz" too.. so many big names grace that forum, perhaps only in lurk mode but still...

theres a difference between arguing and debate

Anyone who listens to general consensus of opinions on a msgboard needs some serious help. I'd like to think we all got our minds which we can make up for ourselves. Anyone who s incapable of doing so should leave this thread now ;)

not really... well perhaps it is.. but i don't think that's a name of a genre.... just a good play on words to sum up a little sub-genre in one word.....

perhaps a description for sine-wave bass lead heavily edited breaks based d&b akin to the production work of breakage, paradox and indeed equinox..
