Source in fucking huge letters... I'm sure Brillo / Digital / whoever has lost count! Which event are they at?

I'd rather go to Expression 7 than Fresh and Navi!

It's just an easier way of describing things sometimes !!

I say is anyone going to Blackmarket Skibba at the weekend as they recognise more than anyone going to Reload !

Navigtor really does nothing at all for me within DnB. I rate the other stuff he has done with Freestylers etc but I am yet to understand what all the hype is about. Annoys me on tapes ! Maybe my views will change ??

he's better live than on a tapepack !

the reason the DJ names are so big is basic marketing.

i haven't heard navi in years, but i never used to like him, maybe he has improved... we shall indeed see!

Well this is exactly my bloody point bruv!!

It's the fault of the promoters, hence my giving headaches to Nicky, Bravo, Sublime and everyone!

Well...

Okay I should learn to button it and stop telling people what I think the unwritten 'rules' are but...

surely they agree that they want their brand / their label / their promotion to become 'recognised' more...

No disrespect to Bass Invaders but I'd rather people remember going to Break Convention 5 than *going to* Overkill and Phil Blunt, like! [And remember *all* the lineup!]

Do I make sense or is it just more Merge 'n' Codshit?!

Haha!

MIKEE HUSSLA
22nd September 2003, 08:01 AM
Well it works both ways because people are always gonna say for example Blackmarket Skibba etc (and Fluid!) but you usually know what promoters are doing it to.

Mikee Merge n C
22nd September 2003, 04:15 PM
Sorry [going off topic]

Do you think so?
Why don't people say "going Reload mate?!"
"Going Blackmarket Skibba?!" not only has more cyllables and is actually more of a mouthful it sounds nonesense IMO!

this is true, but i cant remembner everyone who played and i was there

i think its more a psycological thing kind of, ppl will link the night to something they can easilly remember, and who they went to see is probly the easiest thing for them to remember :badteeth:

Mikee Merge n C

Fair enough.
What if the person you are going to see is not the headliner? It still doesn't work mate!

MIKEE HUSSLA
23rd September 2003, 01:41 PM
It does !! You'll never change it unless you have a huge promoter etc or a very well known name. Source for example are getting there and I think HQ I normally call HQ because it's really simple although I have said a few "You going to see Bailey" because that's what you will mainly be doing plus other artists !!

*most* people go to an event becuase they are wanting to hear someone play.. now goldie on a flyer will bring down a shit load more people than lets say for example mikee merge.

THUS

golides name may be in lights.. that is just basic maketing.

i don't care if people say

who is going to source
who is going up the zodiac
who is going to see goldie/dj hamster-nibbler etc.

a night is a night.

So true!

It's always been this way, specially with local nights, if it's a headline DJ playing @ a night, peeps tend to say i'm going to Bailey or Blackmarket or whatever..I quite often find myself saying you going to HQ for Bailey or summat like that, of course i'm going for the whole shibang, but sometimes it's easier to relate to nights that way..The bigger nites peeps will nearly alwasy say, ya going to One Nation, Slammin Vinyl...or whatever...it's one of the phenomenom's I think...:)

Manikular
23rd September 2003, 02:19 PM
vyper good point...

it's not like you would say.. i'm off to john digweed when it's homelands you are actually going to.

however if he was playing park end i would probably say yup i'm off to see diggers tonight!

Basic marketing?

Hhhm.

Whatever.

I reckon its a con. Trying to make money by selling your party on the names not the experience...

You lot have the rights to your opinions [and with all due respect, it's only been the last 5 years that raves have been marketed like this - get to know!] but Manik I'm surprised at you mate! You have been in this shit longer than me!

Do you not remember flyers with big dogs and locals all listed equally?

Even people who are going to the nights, they're not the promoters but they call it Friction @ Zodiac etc etc

You can't go telling all the people going to the nights off ?? :ban:

Mikee Merge n C
23rd September 2003, 05:23 PM
BAN?!
Well. Thanks a lot.

Mikee. Mate...

Come on... As much as I do have a little dig I ain't really beefin with anyone on here... Not even Chemical [although by now me thinks he probably slates me - not surprised really - I do rant and lip it! Sorry... Moodswings - nothing personal really.]

People round here ain't got a clue. If a promoter markets their shit like that then of course the people are gonna talk about things like that!

I ain't having a go at the public, in that sense, I just think they wont enjoy a DJ unless he is big these days. It's a shame, if you ask me!
They won't change unless 'we' [the people working behind the scenes] do. When we say 'Reload' they say 'Bo!' You get me?!

For me personally - as you can tell - I find it stressful. Maybe that's just my stubborness and I need to get with the times...
It comes from being a twelve year old and going into Mighty Force, Exeter and buying a Grooverider Quest tape and enjoying it, and the following week buying a Bryan Gee tape [before 8 packs existed] as it was the only Quest tape in stock so it had to do. Bryan Gee being a simple name and [to me] an unheard of DJ - I wasn't expecting much.

How wrong was I?

That was and still is one of the phattest [fastest!!! 170bpm, at least, in 1993!] tapes I've got! Great tunes interesting mixing, great MC's, great recording [a rarity]...

I'm ranting...

Basically right my point is...

YOU CANNOT JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER MY FRIEND.
We need to be encouraging the ravers to look for something new. Encourage them to try out other names. Other characters in the story... Do I make sense....

I wish I could pause time so I could check out every DJ on the planet of Drum 'n' Bass. Impossible, but I needn't waste quite so much time listening to the same people though, innit.

I don't like using names but nuff DJ's [you say Brockie] clang out like fuck.
You may have dropped your usual heavy as fuck Hussla set half an hour before his set and you won't have had that many people dancing no matter how clean your mixing was!
Now, Brockie [for example] comes on and WHAAAAAAAA?! nuff people!
He's only playing like tracks we've heard loads and all the up 'n' comings have got... And ain't even enjoying his [just another] set.

But it's Brockie!

He must be good....

The non educated punters [eg. students mixing with the common folk] love it. It's a placebo effect in my opinion.

Put everyones name as big as Frictions on the poster and you need some paper perhaps six times the size... But damn will it make the punters enjoy every set a hell of a lot more...

You don't have to agree. This is my opinion. Freedom of Speech...

I get where you are coming from though bud...

We are all SO FUCKING INTO THIS MUSIC!

God bless JUNGLE DRUM 'N' BASS!!!

Peace. Spliff... :tea:

Mikee... my flyer collection goes back to 1989.

if you would like to pop round some time i shall show you countless flyers which will disagree with your statement.

of course marketing changes with time just like in any other industry.. just look at tv or magazine adverts..

generations change and i'm very sad to say that the rave days of yesterday ARE a different generation to the ones today..

most of the people who went to the likes of Fantazia are now in their thirties...

remember that flyers are there to catch the eye, not many people read the entire flyer like us guys do.... some people just skim them... like i would do for a house or hip hop night like...

I'd love to play at HQ so I can prove that I have a more diverse selection than what some people have heard (not that much diverse)!! But now I have blown my speakers in my room so I can't make a good recording for Manikular !! One day !!

I've played at the Cellar before !! Me & Trauma rocked it !! Some random student night called Pic n Mix and we basically played dark and light stuff ad was real fun. Cellar to mix is :funk:
