See a lot of people heading to Brighton at weekends, who'll be next to move outta town?
Forum people who've left the city:
Manikular, Smokey, Jibba, Alys, Han D, and me of course...who else?
And for those that have gone, what do you miss the most and the least about Oxford?!

I have often thought about moving, but have a really good job here so would be silly to leave. When I'm qualified and ready to move on would probably look at working for a firm in London, but not for a few years yet......plus my future millionaire husband will probably wanna whisk me away somewhere hot and exotic haha

I left this summer after living there for 4 years, it's a nice city and I like that it's small enough that you always bump into people you know when you go out and it's nice and scenic. At the same time, coming from Bristol, it's size does seem a little limiting and it's easy to get into a routine or ending up travelling to London or other cities for things to do plus there aren't a great deal of jobs, depending on what interests you obviously.

its ok for the time being, but i wouldnt want to live here forever. I should imagine within the next 3 years or so i'll be looking to move on, depending on whats happening in my life obviously.

I love Birmingham but imagine that I'll be moving out into a smaller town or village within the next two years. I would like to still be within an hour's drive from Oxfordshire and within 20 minutes from Brum city centre.

Don't plan to be around from sometime next year, go away travelling for a bit, prob then live elsewhere, if I do come to Oxford, I won't be participating in any type of promoting or dj'ing, I just don't enjoy the scene anymore, but I do love HQ. Oxford is a nice city, depends what you have going for you and what you do with your time. . . . .living abroad is very appealing, for me, this weather is not right, I need sun.

Now that I'm out of the dnb scene i find Oxford a much nicer place to be. Once you take a step back you realise how much other music is actually on offer here.
Having said that, i think it won't be too long until i move further away from Oxford, with 3 options - Oxfordshire countryside, Bristol or Brighton. All depends on finance, marriage, kids etc...

There's nothing wrong with not having kids because they impede your own lifestyle. As big a cliche as it is, you only get one life and it's not an obligation to have children. Not that i'm against it, I can just see why some would be.

To me the point of having kids is that I'd actually want to start a family. Not because I felt bored with everything else!
Sure I want kids, I'm just not in a hurry. :)

I left Oxford when I went to uni (about 5-6 years ago) coz moved straight to Brighton from uni for a few years, then I popped back to Ox to do my teaching course and save some money, moved to London and am now in Paris. I don't think I could actually move to Oxford - I like it coz it's where I grew up/went to college etc but it's too small and there's not enough going on.

Born and bred in Ox. Went to Uni in Brighton. Went back to Ox in 2001 with the intention of staying the summer before heading south. 5 years later I got my arse in gear and upped sticks. Ox was wicked for that time but I started getting bored with the town and quite a few friends had moved on.
Brightons wicked and it makes visiting Ox a really pleasant experience too...

I never actually answered this myself.
What I miss the most: People
What I miss the least: Small nights with little variation and seeing the same people all the time. Is it possible to even make new friends in Oxford? I felt like I knew everyone who liked my sort of dnb! Even when the good djs are booked, it bizarrely doesn't even guarantee it will be sell out!
There are so many things going on in bristol, last weekend there was Randall, AI and Insiders at intrigue, Audio, The Sect and Panacea at another night, and bukem at another night. Plus a zillion other things I don't even know about. I wonder if even Brighton can be beat that :D London might have those options, but it takes about an hour, if not more, to get from one side of the city to another. All this is practically on my doorstep and two of the three clubs are walking distance. Despite that, I live on a nice quiet residential street! My walk to work takes 20minutes, I cross the river and walk past the harbour. Beats Botley Road by a rather large margin! A train to london takes just 15mins more than the oxford tube bus. :)

I've wanted to move from Oxford for a good cuppla years, just my finances are shit, so can't do anything till they are sorted & I actually have savings...so i could be here for ever :( I'd like to move to Bristol or London, for me they are both places in the UK that i've wanted to live. Both have alot more going on, and I spend alot of time going to these places. Oxford music scene has got worse over the last few years imo, not so bad if your into other genre's other then D&B, the politics ruin it and clueless venue management. Over the last year or so, I have also been considering Brighton & even going back to Hertfordshire, maybe Cambridge, got alot more going for it now. Once my finances are sorted, i'll be reviewing my options, as i'll have to weigh up other options, ie Girlfriend, Job (Which is shit at the moment).

I find it strange people saying the scene has got worse in Oxford recently, I can't see it personally. As far as i'm aware the nights are working together much better than they were 2-3 years ago. Maybe I just don't know the full story, I can only talk from the point of HQ

I agree the nights are working together more then they were 2-3 years ago, only because they are actually taking note of when the nights are on...Maybe its the credit crunch, but nights don't have as many ppl going to them now, even with a good line up. (I can only speak about the nights i've been to & witnessed). Also the vibe isn't always there imo, which could just be me getting old, ppl going to events just to get fucked rather then the music...dunno...I can't quite put my foot on why I feel the scene isn't as good..maybe its the politics that go on that grinds my gears so much, that it puts me off. I surpose when when I go to these nights in London, Bristol or whether cozz I don't see or hear so much about behind the scene stuff it doesn't effect me like it does in Oxford!? This is just my ten cents, I can't speak for the others that think the scene isn't as good anymore.

If I love dnb, which I do, and I want to go out to dnb nights which I like, which I do, then invariably, I will need to find like minded people in which to share this pleasure. No?
Please don't tell me I need other 'hobbies'. I like going out. I like dancing and I like drum n bass. I do plenty of other things which are not music related, thanks for your concern.

It's not you getting old, it's you getting tired of the same venues in the same city for, what, nine or ten years now? It's a long time to live in a small city. You outgrew Herts, the same way you are outgrowing Oxford!
Even when HQ and OX4 pack it out, they are still pretty small venues. I'm not dissing them, or saying you can't get an atmosphere there, because you can, and I've had loads of good nights here and the line ups are all good quality! .(and I wouldn't be back on Saturday if that wasn't the case)...but eventually I think you just outgrow somewhere ... I need new nights, new venues, bigger dancefloors and more people to meet. I just outgrew what I knew.
The main difference I see in the nightlife between bristol and oxford (aside variety and cost) is that there just seems to be so many more clubbers here. That's surely because of the size...so in that sense, Oxford can't compete.

Yeah these are good points. I guess I don't get that because I don't live in Oxford, I only come in for HQ and about one other night a month apart from going to the pub with 'non-dnb' mates so i'm not constantly surrounded by it.

I like Oxford. I like the diversity of nights here, but most importantly for me, my job is here and having a local knowledge of the area is vital to what I do. I've got lots of friends here (outside of drum and bass) as well as within the dnb community. I'm not too keen on moving at the minute, not until i've notched up a lot more experience workwise anyway. I've thought about london, but i decided that while i like visiting london, i also like returning home to oxford. Bristol was an option a while ago and i did go for a few jobs there, but 1) didn't get them and 2) looking back, wouldn't have wanted to work for the employers in question. I'm luckly coz I've got mates scattered around the country - Northampton, Cambridge, Manchester, Reading, London, Bournemouth, Southampton, Bristol, etc., etc., and it's great to go and visit them at the weekends. Oxford is pretty much perfectly located for all. Plus I live in Abingdon - which quite frankly rocks.
