After breaking all previous box office records for a Friday club night at the Carling Academy Oxford, Free Range bring to you another cutting edge line up exploring the depths of Grime, Dubstep, Drum & Bass and Hip Hop. Whilst other club nights bring you the same generic line ups and brands found city to city, Free Range offers something truly refreshing to the people - for Oxford, with Oxford, from Oxford residents.

FRIDAY 13th FEBRUARY @ O2 ACADEMY OXFORD

CHASE & STATUS (RAM Records)
feat. KANO & TAKURA performing Against All Odds

http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/9493/chasestatusfu4.jpg

Having taken the Drum and Bass and now the Dubstep scene by storm, Chase and Status have reached the top of these UK underground genres. Chase and Status' debut album more than a lot has placed 20th in the UK dance charts just behind acts such as Portishead and Hot Chip. Chase and Status will be doing a one off special apperence with UK Grime godfather Kano performing his new single with the duo 'Against all odds'...

http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/2056/kanoad5.jpg

Kano has been nominated for 4 MOBO awards and has won the title of best newcomer. His debut album 'Home Sweet Home' was a great critical success, well reviewed across the British press, most notably in The Independent and The Observer, two of the UK's major newspapers. Many artists in the UK and in America have expressed positive views of Kano's music, including Busta Rhymes, Nas, RZA, Jay-Z, Andre 3000 and Chuck D of Public Enemy.

BEARDYMAN & JFB (Battlejam)
UK Beatbox champion vs UK DMC champion

http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/5263/beardymanbt9.jpg

What do you get when you cross the best beatboxer in the UK with the best DJ? The answer is 'Battle Jam'. A fast paced improvised battle between mouth and fingers. With a bit of crowd sampling, vj'ing, fish fighting and lots of general crazyness thrown in for good measure.

N-TYPE (Rinse FM)

http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/1481/ntypedg7.gif

Having recently been awarded the title of best DJ at the Dubstep awards, N-Type has been in the highest demand smashing clubs from London to Tokyo. Massively respected by all DJs from Electro to Hip Hop, his consistency, tune selection, technical abillity and crowd interaction has led to a lot of clubbers to call him the 'ANDY C' of Dubstep.

N-type winner of best dj at the dubstep awards
Andy c winner of the best dj at the drum and bass awards

both play across the board

both have the same mixing style, teases / double drops / quick.

both interact with the crowd well

It just says people have been calling him that, not that he is or that a recent internet poll of 100 brighton electro dj's found that 100 % of them would agree with the statement "n-type is the Andy c of dubstep".

Its actually quite common for dubstep producers to be called the "Andy C of dubstep"

Let me refer you to article 1:

http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=49361&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=type+andy+andrew++dubstep&start=0

One thing they do have in common is that they're both a bit over-rated :badsonar2:

do you really think so? Technically the guy is good and he knows how to read a crowd. Every time i've seen Andy the crowd has gone absolutely nuts for it. Whilst not every set has been to my taste i don't know who else has such a wide appeal across drumnbass and beyond.

I agree that he's a tight DJ, plays to the dancefloor and is good at what he does. I even like some of the Nightlifes. But I just think he's a bit overhyped - in the last couple of years I've got my hopes up every time I've seen him and he's been a bit of a let down and has played pretty much exactly the same set!

Can think of many other not as well known DJ's who can build a set much better (more subtly) - I'm not really looking for tune after tune of anthems

i think a large proportion of people who go to these raves, nutted out of their head and who vote in those polls etc ARE looking for a bit of an anthem bash, hence why he gets voted number one. A lot of people are into the quick mixing / tease style that Andy does and you must admit he is very good at it. Also, if he's playing maybe two sets a night every friday and saturday at least, are you surprised that elements of his sets are repeated? I think anyone would struggle to maintain some pure originiality in their sets if they were playing as much as he does. Also, there's no smoke without fire, as they say; surely there's a reason Andy is constantly referrred to as number 1? I dunno, just sparking conversation here. Interested to hear people's thoughts.

ps: sorry for thread hijack!! everyone should go to free range and see whether ntype really can be compared to mandy g.
