A US Airways jet dropped abruptly out of the sky into the frigid waters of the Hudson river yesterday after being crippled by what initial reports said were birds entering one or both of its engines shortly after take-off from La Guardia airport.

Across New York, astonished residents, workers and tourists watched as the Airbus 320, with 150 passengers and five crew on board, descended and struck the water a stone's throw from the densely populated avenues of Manhattan. The jet skimmed the surface almost like a sea-plane.

Apparently a flock of geese, got in BOTH engines. Unlucky, and lucky at the same time.

from reading around the fact everyone survived is down to the excellent skills of the pilot. Apparently landing on water is incredibly difficult as if you're not perfectly level a wing tip will hit the water first and then there's a whole world of shit

By lucky, I am not saying there was no skill, he's clearly an amazing pilot! But if there had of been a lot of wind, then that kind of precision is surely near impossible? Also luck in the fact that everyone got out safely, nobody drowned, got stuck, struck by someones duty free wine and smacked on the head and knocked out etc etc. Amazing.
