Good news for England too as its surely the nail in the coffin for Defoe to go to the world cup.
Wigan will be struggling alongside us at the end of the season.

That's what they said on Match of the Day which shocked me because I thought that was pretty much nailed on anyway. Why would you leave out Defoe?

Well that position is essentially still up for grabs, and there's all this talk of bringing Owen if he's up to fitness. Considering they have very similar styles and roles it seems they're both competing for the place.
...well they were.

strikers for me at the world cup would be:
rooney
defoe
Gabi
owen
Crouch/C.Cole

can we afford to take that many?
For me it's
Rooney
Defoe
Crouch
Don't think Cole's ready and i have lost my faith in Owen sadly

i dont think 3 strikers for a world cup is enough for 2 positions, 1 injury and we're skrood!!
i think owen can have an impact coming off the bench, a la ole gunner

hasn't really worked at Man Utd though, why should it for England?

Add Walcott into the mix because he can play upfront or on the wing and has the pace to have a devastating effect on tired teams if he comes off the bench

Walcott is a good player, but he hasn't shown as much progress as i'd like to be honest. Rooney's progress from a young age was much quicker. Walcott has struggled with injuries, but i expected him to be like Maradona by now. And he's not. I'd probably take him.
How many players are we allowed to take?
fonik
25th November 2009, 04:39 PM
whats he really got apart from pace though? his only trick is to knock it past the defender and run quicker. cant cross for shit which is worrying for a winger
would not take him to the world cup. aaron lennon > theo walcott atm.

I think he's a natural finisher and I get excited when he receives the ball as you don't know what he's going to do with it. He just needs a good run injury free in the first team.

I'd be very suprised if he didn't take:
Rooney
Heskey
Defoe
Crouch

yeah I'd say that Lennon on current form is greater than Walcott, injuries have got in the way of Walcott being the player he has the potential of being, to say he is shit is way off imo.

Walcott has only played 90 minutes this season, he would need to start at least 15 -20 games to be within a shout.
You could also say the same for Heskey aswell though, he's barely played for Villa this season.
I would rather see Agbonlahor get a chance, we need his pace.

yeah gabi's a good shout, pretty staunch now too. If he proved himself this season, id much prefer C.Cole to heskey, despite his ability to hold up the ball, some of his missed opportunities have been woefull, i also dont like the way we've resorted to punting long balls when we run out of ideas in the past and i think heskey is a catalyst for this

Very true. And this is a worry with Crouch too, despite his good track record for England.
Still, my shout would be...
Rooney
Defoe
Carlton Cole
Crouch
...there's more difficulty picking the midfield IMO. I don't rate Carrick much and Barry and Gerrard can be hit & miss. Lampard is back on form with England so is a dead cert to start. Problem is, we have too many fighting for the right/wing position and not enough lefties. Apart from Joe Cole, Ashley Young (when playing well) is our best attacking midfield/wing player who can play both sides. Apart from him though, who is there?

Actually come to think of it, Milner played really well in that position the last few games and was one of our few good players against Brazil. He could really come into his own in time for the World Cup.

he's a bit of a grubby pikey though. Pretty sure he'll be rifling through everyone's lockers, stealing all their bling
