well shares can change in price all the time. at the moment vodafone ones are £1.38. now everytime i buy a share vodafone will buy me one for free... so i put in £100 a month and get £200 worth back... the share price is currently going up.... last year it was 90p. so it's a good investment.. i also get a dividend payment every year which is a percentage of the profits per share.
i must add that shares can also fuck up. but i haven't had any probs currently.

niether did i...
all i know is that when demand for shares is high, the price goes up...
since the interest rates are starting to climb, house prices will now start to fall thus people will invest in stocks and shares as they *could* get a better return for their money.
now the futures market is fucking confusing... how can you buy something that doesn't exist and make money on it.
jesus.
