Anyone would think it's a rule that you have to mix right up until the bassline drops.

What's it all about?
Boring. Boring. BORING!

I know it's each to their own but come on. At least one of you must agree with this.

Yes you've got them in sync, yes you've got the fader in the middle. Yes it's so fucking in time that a billionth of a second wouldn't even slack. Yes you look cool bouncing about behind the decks. But are you having fun just playing two records at once?! Often you got two tunes with totally different keys just playing over the top of each other. It clashes and sounds out-of-tune. Tell that to the DJ, he still believes that he might not get bookings anymore if he doesn't behave like 'real' DJ's.

What is a 'real' DJ anyway? John Peel?

So many DJ's do this unimaginative mixing. What's the point. I'll just buy a piece of software to do that for me.

Second drop means start the next tune. Keep them rolling perfectly with the current tune beginning to fade out and lose it all together in time for the drop.

Drum 'n' Bass DJ's are slow. Hip Hop DJ's rule.

Hip Hop music is slow. Drum 'n' Bass music rules.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm cussing anyone who doesn't batter the buttons and abuse the faders but when I'm trackmarking these CD's its so predictable!
On the screen every portion is almost identical in length!!

It also goes with my thoughts on how Intro, Build-up, Drop, Bridge, Second Drop, Outro routines on records are so old as well..

Some of you will assume if you are producing a track it has to have these elements. Bollocks.

BE YOURSELF.

And there's a lot of people reading this thinking 'I wonder if he means me?'

No I don't - I mean Mampi fucking Swift most of the time.

well i kinda agree.. i mean some people double drop for double dropping sake but when you get true artists doing it then they get my respect..

i mean i really hate the nine... i've heard it a million times but when people like zinc and andy use it they use it more like a tool rather than the basic track.

swift is OTT. but others who are more subtle run things.

but it is dependent on the track.. i mean bukem couldn't double drop a single track but tracks made by the full cycle camp can be used very effectively.

Okay.

If you had sets [studio / live] of all the oxford clan without any MC would you be able to tell which DJ it was [without looking at the box!]?

I can distinguish [by their originality of mixing and sometimes track selection] these lot:
Trends
John E Bravo
Tricky Nicky
Raw
Mikee Hussla
Paolo
Gomez
Mattrick
[plus more] because they have trademark styles.

But I have trouble telling others apart!

Cool Spot
20th February 2004, 04:03 PM
I can certain people.

Is any one feeling what I'm saying though?

Jibba
23rd February 2004, 06:34 PM
I mix how I want to mix and do it when it feels most comfortable. When I get better i'll be able to try out lotsa different styles ie teasing and unexpected double drops but until then I'm just gonna blend the tracks as I see fit.

I use the highs, lows and gains to full effect and juggle and chop to the best of my ability. However, the 'boring stlye' you mentioned is a nice way to blend tunes and it works, most of the time.

Ov3RKiLL

hmm well, i dunno... my mixing changes depending on the tune im mixing into

if i dont have alot of time ill just mix the intro up to the drop, and switch over to the new tune

but if i have enough time i like to get a tease in there and roll 2 - b lines together for a while

lately, every day im comming up with new ideas + working out nice mixes that roll together well

everyone has their style i suppose...

Mikee Merge n C
24th February 2004, 12:48 PM
Innit!

I'm sure I bug people with my constant muddling up the b-lines and crossfade choppage at times!

Different strokes and all that!

Sorry I was haviong a rant at the start of this thread cos I think a lot of up 'n' comings try to hard to be a DJ or an MC.

They don't realise that if they are on stage they basically already are!

24th February 2004, 12:57 PM
respect merge, its gotta be said (and said again) - its about having your own mixing 'style'. a 'bot cannot imitate true versatility.

mixing style aside, the selection def runs things - who wants to play the same playlist as anyone (everyone) else????

oh and while i'm at it (not often enuf i know), its *not* who you know but *what* you know that earns respect - name dropping will only demonstrate you know someones first name, but getting up and representing and letting ppl make their own minds up will earn you much much more respect and kudos.

don't like it? - well take it up with David (hee hee ;))

Peace to *all*

depends on the music you play.

i personally hate key clashes but when you can cut up and double drop stuff in key it sounds amazing [ friction is very good at this! ]

i prefer to mix oldskool since it comes from the school of cut & paste. usually when i play an hour set of old skool i will get through about 30-40 tracks....

when i mix liquid d&b an hour might allow me to play 12-13 tracks tops.

good stuff to cut up and blend is the early bristol stuff.

it's nice that sine wave and 808 rollers are becoming popular again since it's wicked to blend these tunes.

the noisey renegade hardware type stuff is a bit harder imho so you have to work at it.

in key is when the notes being played fit in harmonics. it's hard for me to explain but you can tell when something is in key.

take fame academy or whatever... bad singers do not sing in key.. and you can tell

I'm feel i'm always learning, i've been mixing for 9 years, but i'm still learning new things more & more! Which ever style of music I play, I like to think i've got my own style...if anyone thinks different then so be it..I like mixing a set which is gonna be different from other DJ's on the night or whenever...ok sometimes I do play a cuppla tracks that someone else might, but the set will still be different...so I hope! :)

When u first start out though, you do stick to wot you've learnt, & continue until, your more confident..this will always be.

Regarding Mampi, he is a wicked DJ, but he does go a bit OTT sometimes..ie Formation VS Innovation Part 1 @ the Sanctuary, he was that ott, he made too many mistakes. On other occasions is been blinding..the system someone plays on makes a difference i think...the sound system, the decks, mixer etc...

sadly, no...i don't even have a copy myself. after turning in the script to my mentor (the only printout i had), i went to access the file and it had corrupted. i brought it in to a local computer shop and the guy worked for 3 hours trying to retrieve it. after 3 hours of that, he managed to retrieve about 1/2 page of dialogue and my name.

but i still keep in contact with the professor who was my mentor for the project...and i believe he still has the original copy.

i will tell you, though, that i threw in a musical scene...lots of fishy dancing and drunk court jester clownfish blowing bubbles. it's grand:hyper:

Another pet hate of mine is teasing with the same old tracks. 'The One' The Nine' the fucking ten million other wicked tracks from history get forgotten!

Like 'Champion Sounds' and 'Valley Of The Shadows' - wicked but what about other tracks from that era?

I mixed Distorted Minds 'Warriors' into Nookies 'Drummer Of Doom' [Reinforced] and it sounded ill mate. 1993 / 2003 combination...

Double dropping although heavy can sometimes pprevent the flow sometimes.

You see you get 2 big tunes, they drop together, loads of mayhem and tehn there's that point of which you have to put it back to one tune and unless you get it until the next break sometimes it a bit "errrrr, hmmmm" if you get me !!
