i found that the best way to get started was on the all in one programmes like fruity loops and reason, just messing about about creating loops etc, acid is good for learning how to arrange (but i think its crap) you can try cuebase and logic although they are a lot more complex, try getting your head round the easier things first.

Shit man, how long a list?...

This is what I use, although I still need monitors.

Cubase SX highly recommended if it'll run - should do.
Sonic Foundry Sound Forge
Reason 2 (as a notepad)
Recycle
Z3TA+
Native FM7
Native Pro52 and Pro53
Novation bass-station
Novation V-station
T-Racks
Absynth
Waves platinum plug-ins
Amplitube.

It's taken a while to get them all but you can do with a lot less. Keep us informed eh!?

made a jokes ragga style lop yesterday at a mates and think I will get the jist of it all.

I always play about with stuff on computers so hopefully will all fall into place.

Will get fruit loops and reson, plus whatever a certain person can sort out for me....

Once I get some tunes, will put em up here and can actually play part in the whole fresh material business. :D

reason is prob the best way to introduce yourself to sampling and using a synth. the synths in reason are good and the sequncer is easy to use. you will need a soft sampler to record samples and any editing. sound forge is prob the easiest one to get hold of. what i like about reason is gives you a little of everything ....when you have half way got your hed round that then get cuebase ...or logic.

I'd get well confused with all those programmes!

Although you can have a main and run things through it can't you.

Just like having a mixre and channels?

Yeah, cubase can run with reason as a slave. the others are VSTs which run on cubase too. Bit of a complicated way to do it. I'd start with the bits you're saying. Reason is good no doubt.

By the way Manik, Concord Dawn said he used Fruity Loops only. Is he having us on or what!?

I Started on reason and i spent ages learning how to use it really well. I know people say start with this but now i regret it so much, I wish i'd jumped in at the deep end with cubase from the off.

I'll just see what my mate reckons.

He'll hopefully be able to bburn off some stuff and I'll see what I'm comfortable with to start with.

Fruit loops looks alright to start on.

Will check reason too.

maybe you stuck withit too long. i originally started of with vst 32 and realised that as i dont own all the out bourd you need to run it effectively i found it very hard to write on (didnt have the cash to get kontact or halion ). i then got reason and it allowed ne to quickly get ideas down and start arranging then bounce it out to audio and then use cubase. i think now i have the advantage of quick writing and the audio quality of SX. this cuts writing tunes down to 2-3day proccess. now i record live guitars and hopefully vocals cuebase should really start to come into its own.

You can make some really good shit with Reason, don't knock it! Took me a while to get into it, but Tricky showed me the basics and i was away.

Bag of weed + PC + Reason + some samples off CD and the internet + a little patience = Badass Tunes!

I recon the safest bet to get results quick and start learning is to get fruitystudio, again it would be possible to get it on soulseek [www.slsknet.org] this is a fully integrated studio environment and it's easy to get to grips with but also boats some fucking phat top notch features for when you get to a higher level.
having said that though, you'll want cubase too (go for SX2 as it's the latest ,as in; less bugs). cubase is a must cos one of the most useful things about it is once you've done some nice riffs and shit in Fruity you can export them and then sequence them in Cubase (it's far better and more visual that FL's sequencing). Get soundforge as well mate, it'll allow you to sample films, sample bits off your vinyl, cut out bits of mp3s etc. it's ace for editing loop points etc. I prefer it to wavelab for the simple reason I was well into wavelab then I had one go on soundforge and then guess what - wavelab welcome to the recycle bin!

to recap - www.slslnet.org (if you're that way inclined ;))
soundforge (gor for 6 or 7)
fruity studio
cubase sx

the fundamentals. of I better say that there is no correct or better software/approach to this shit mate its all personal preferance and shit but these are a good combo for getting in to it and they will last cos they are all ace programs that I rate a lot.
hope this has been useful and not bulshit heehee see ya
