A nice little sing a long with Stamina :badteeth:
we like it you like we like it too, with DJ markey on wax for the {crowd joins in}
.. .. .. ..
Was a good night but sometimes I find it funny how Source claims to be at the forefront of innovation with fresh ideas & the strictly no cheese approach and then . . . . :funk:
I hear Herbzie was in the ride. Should of got him on instead of Blaze
Big up the crew, just mentioning something I noticed and at the time found quite funny considering the image built up in my mind of source as a whole.

wicked wicked night, big shouts to Marky and Stamina MC-an awesome performance, especially the Marky, totally smashes it on the decks, like no other this year at Source.....by the way, @Hussla, that is Stamina'sost recognised lyric, it was on LK as you know so I guess he drops it coz peeps are gonna know it, the tune did get in the Top 10 after all........maybe not what you expected, I liked it, different to any other MC I've heard.............
not sure that Marky has played at any other night/venue in Oxford, wonder why that is???
Shouts to: Manikular, Mattrick, Sykane, Azonica, Jay Jay, Raw, DJ Fu, Alladin........and all that represented! Bout time the placed was rammed!
next stop RANDALL & FRICTION......................

Stamina needs to check FTB then don't he!
Sounds like I missed another good 'un!
It's a shame everyone rants about 'LK' because they have all come with far more than that since then....
I haver to fast-forward when I hear that track now - I blame that on working at Abingdon Net Youth Project.
Don't you hate it when a track you love gets ruined by overplayment?!

its pretty hard to be too different these days, Keaton + Matrix was a very quiet night, I see them as 'different', 'new/fresh tunes', 'new faces', etc..problem is getting peeps tio come and see the new names........

Keaton and matrix was a heavy night, but most non-dnb students wouldnt have heard of them. nearly everyone's heard of Marky these days - guaranteed to fill the place up ( = more money for promoters, club et al).
MIKEE HUSSLA
1st June 2004, 05:30 PM
just a note - i'm not moaning about the lk treatment. i think markey is a heavy dj plus it was cool to see him do the scratching over ska again ! Last time I saw that was 2oo1 ! Plus the accapella with Markey tapping the deck was different.
Maybe a mix for each night. More crowd puller next to an up and coming so you get to put the fresh talent there but get a crowd in for it too.

Even my Mum was impressed when i said i was playing after Marky, i think that shows he is probably the most know name in Dnb with Goldie, Roni Size and Fabio and Grooverider.

I hate to sound like I'm ranting again...
the advertising for Matrix and Keatons bookings wasn't gonna catch peoples eyes.
How about
DRUM 'N' BASS
in huge letters on the posters?!
No disrespect to any of my residents but we pulled in numbers without any so-called 'names' and that I put down to making the words JUNGLE, DRUM and BASS bladdy massive so no bugger could blame it on 'not knowing all the producers these days' or whatever...
It's supposed to be underground - putting names in huge letters is what you do for bands and pop groups.
I'm surprised Brillo, someone whos been there since the start, lets his raves get marketed like that, personally...
It has no respect for Jay Jay etc - they don't even get a mention.
Especially since Souce finishs at 4am nowadays!
Perfect opportunity to beef up the whole line-up and make it look like an event, not just a 'spotlight' on a certain specialist.
Warm-up smorm-up.
Supporting 'bands'. :ban:
If these higher paid performers are really that good the crowd will enjoy it. I'm sorry butr these muppets who pour out of Oxfords parties are not there for the rave scene they are there for 'Superstar DJ's', and as an up 'n' coming DJ myself it makes me fucking sick.
See, now Manik, Chemical and whoever may come with reasons and shit - that's all good - if you're happy with that then who am I to argue?!
I see the point about certain DJ's [etc] are worldwide, and we [or at least I] am not [yet] but the people that do know who Zinc is, for example, *know* that he is a worldwide DJ - those that don't need to learn, sure, but through the right means [ie. record buying, magazine reading, flyer collecting etc.]
Now - the difference is - nuff grungers and other music followers can already name our biggest players and yet they couldn't listen to them and distinguish who is who.
"Oh Drum 'n' Bass?! Yeah you got Andy C, Nicky Blackmarket, Mampi Smith..." etc. And they ain't junglists - they don't deserve to know about this without being a true follower in my opion.
There are too many drum 'n' bass listeners now, and it all adds to a diluted scene. In my opinion!
Sorry but this is what gets on my tits most about the scene today.

And we've all heard people get paid hundreds of pounds to clang with tracks we've got at home!
Surely you are feeling me on this?!
If the DJ is so good - he will be good no matter how he is summed up on the press.

mr merge, i understand whole heartedly about your amazing marketing prowess considering that every event you are invovled with flops big time.
hussla marky & stamina usually do a few crowd favourites in all their sets, i must say that they didn't anthem bash too bad. for every anthem they played, their were 3 new tracks played.
the problem with running a night is that most oxfordians don't want cutting edge producers but tried and tested known djs.
i'm sure the forthcoming line ups will please all people tho!

If you can afford a quality dj, and quality design and print you will get the people in, if you advertise DRUM and Bass people will turn up for a short time, but not forever! Source has been runnin years, stayin underground with the likes of concord dawn, keaton etc, and have specials with Marky ofcourse they were goin to be busy cos these guys are huge!! The marketing for the source is a look of quality not in your face, the fact they are still runnin shows that their strategy works long term!

Must admit I think what residents are playing should at least be on the flyer for Source
This is where I have to say Bravo hols his own as he sticks everyone the same size which is obviously the best for residents but I still at the same time understand putting the residents smaller because of who you are mainly advertsiing but not at all.
To know that Raw etc are playing is surely a good thing as people that know the residents will "hopefully" think, oooh, I'll go and check out his set.

the residents are on the flyer strictly on a rotational basis.
in the future i'll try and work out who is playing when and where!

I think it works well as it is, for everyone, the custys know they are gettin a quality varied mix, the residents get onto most flyers which helps with other bookings, and it saves havin to ring everyone before every event for availablities etc , much easier life!!!

it's tru about matrix and keaton, source relies mostly on the factthat its down on cowley road sothey get loads of students unlike our crowd at the coven which is mostly headz and localz. The students don't know who the hell these producers are and I reckon most ofn the time they are not bothered about hearing the latest sound they want tunes they know and love. Hence Matrix and keaton were quiet and Marky was rammed.........

Loadsa good points bein raised in this thread,
what is a quiet night for the SOurce tho, how many people?
I would have said that the headz went to see keaton and concord dawn and digital wouldnt you?
Everyone has quiet events, its jus the way it goes sometimes, but then everyone has good events too, you cant please everyone every week, no matter how hard you try, but yeah it prooves that events do sell better if you have a bigger name, but thats obvious. So why knock people for that?

Last fridays Source was heavy as fuck, from start to finish! Was good to see Source so full...and full of up for it peeps! :) The LK moment mentioned, I thought was spot on for the moment..I like LK however many times I hear it, was quality to see evryone enjoying the track.
The line ups in Oxford at the moment are good, all nights have been introducing varied line ups, you have to take risks sometimes in the guests you book. When your putting on an event, you want the night to be quality everytime, introducing new faces to the ravers can be a gamble, but its one you have to take. It's all good in Oxford at the moment...and it's getting better! :D

I think people on this board discredit students too much. I'm a student I know who these people are i don't mind hearing something new and different. I know a lot of students that are like me. who i also see at the coven.
At the end of the day dj'ing is about your reputation . marky has a bigger reputation than matrix and keaton and no matter who the promoter is or where the venue is at. Marky is goiing to bring a bigger crowd.
Marky at the coven would be more packed than matrix and keaton at the coven.
