Did anyone see this programme on Channel 4 the other day?

London's size and growth rate has now reached danger point. Officially its population is 7.3 million, inhabiting an area of 174 sq km. But these figures mask a more alarming truth. London has secretly spread far beyond its official limits, and continues to move out into the countryside.

London is no longer just a place. It's a state of mind. And Londoners are waging an undeclared war on the rest of the population. They use subtle but highly toxic lifestyle weapons. In a short time these can weaken an entire locality and lead to complete Londonisation: traffic gridlock, street crime, overpriced shopping enclaves, and a population obsessed with schools, fashionable bars and art shows.

it's not just london, any urban sprawl has the same aspects of life.

for anyone to suggest only london suffers from this is just shear ignorance.

I don't think that mikee, or the programme suggested that it's just london that causes urban sprawl. I think that it was suggesting that london is growing in an unsustainable manner - a problem that affects all of us. London is growing at an alarming rate - much moreso than other cities and it is a problem that affects all of us.

Oxford falls into the london effect. why do you think that london road in headington comes to a standstill in the morning and the evening? it's because oxford is a satellite town where commuters travel from to get to london.

Wy do you think that it only costs about 7 quid to get to london on the oxford tube or one of the two other bus services that travel from oxford to london? it's because there are enough business travellers to make that cost worthwhile for the private companies that operate. Ever tried getting a bus to london between 5-7 in the morning? well you won't get on one in the week because of all the commuters!

London's reach doesn't stop at oxford. Why do you think that the government has relocates it's departments outside of london? It's because they are very aware of this unsustainable growth and are trying to curb it.
