Well I've had two 1210's since November 2001 and approx 300 d&b vinyls. And um, well, I still can't mix. I started off ok but then I completely trashed my mixer. oops.

Learnt to mix on Gemini belt drives with a "get up and scratch" KAM mixer.
Oh what fun those belt drives were.
Cross Fader blew up on the mixer though.
:( :( :( :( :( :(
In the end i was mixing using the volume controls with tacky belt drives.

I've had decks since January last year as people in Method will know that I didn't have decks for absolutely ages, just rinsed Dan's decks and got good on them.
He had a Sony DJ package from a catologue. :D

i started on some direct drive soundlab DLP3's and a numark mixer. they were pretty shoddy, but once i got my technics life was made a great deal easier...
technics do make a hell of a difference and personally i prefer them to the vestax, but that's only cos i'm used to them...
it depends on how flushed you are? or how cheaply you can pick up a second hand pair of technics for - i got mine for £450 + mixer + headphones...

with regards to beat matching, there are little tricks you can learn.. you should be able to learn to beat mix to some extent within a few hours..
practice does make perfect mind..

i would have to show you what i mean... but in a nutshell when you adjust the pitch, always overadjust but then on the next adjustment move it half again and then half again and so on untill the pitch is locked perfectly.

its basicaly narrowng down the pitch till you got it spot on right?
after a while you learn to listen to how much it goes out and move the pitch accordingly. eventually you'll get it closer and closer the with the 1st adjustment of the pitch.
i can beat match pretty dam quickly these days...
but you dont get anywhere if you not prepared to put in the hours/weeks/yrs of effort on the tables!

4 decks works well if you know what you are at!
zinc uses 3 decks all the time... great for teasers or accapellas!

It's good to see how people cope when there's two people controlling three decks ! Fun on your own !

I started off on my mates decks...which were Old Garard decks ( Old Hifi decks) & a Kam mixer. I was started collecting vinyl then...which was bout 8 years ago now! I then got a Hi-fi deck, together with this old Sony Hi-fI deck with a pitch control, I had this little stereo mixer..which had bout four lines (No crossfader though!) Then I replaced the normal hi-fi deck with a Soundlab DLP 1, once I turned 18 though I got Two 1210's & a Numark 1000x mixer. The mixer really is on it's last legs though now...I need a new one desperately (No money to get one though!) Tune wise though, i've got thousands of tunes!!! Not sure how many!?
You can't beat Technics 1210's in my opinion, if anyone's thinking of buying new decks!

First decks that I ever saw were those SoundLab 1600
with the horizontal pitch, yes I did say horizontal, (hey I've seen worse - anyone here
seen a DIAL for the pitch??!?!?). I had a go on them when I was like 11 or 12 but
didn't attempt to mix cos I didn't even know what it was about. That was ages ago.
(Big up AWAX I'll never forget).
First decks I bought were the XL500 (MK1)s with
a 626, a popular package at the time for beginners. I remeber it well I was forcing myslef
to save till I could afford directs cos you all know the score. They were decent decks I
though actually.
Sold 'em and went without for quite some months until I got my
PDX2000s (& 175)
shit gotta go I'm a a mates and hes late for work.....
