Manikular
30th April 2003, 09:45 AM
For our second party we’ve opened up the music policy even further than before, and welcome several acts for their Nottingham debuts, again alongside the best in burgeoning local talent.
Now situated at the brand new and forward-thinking Rescue Rooms venue, expect to hear the very best in upfront drum & bass, live UK hip-hop, live breaks, jazz and funk, along with a few soul and house influences along the way - all spread over three separate rooms.
Headlining in the main room we have a Nottingham debut for one of the real stars of the drum & bass scene – Belfast’s very own Calibre. Having been taken under Fabio’s wing three years ago, Calibre has since recorded tracks for Soul:R, Defunked and of course Creative Source amongst others. With his own definite niche now carved out for himself, Calibre is taking things to the next level with his own Signature Recordings imprint. Get ready for deep and funky grooves of the highest quality, with vocal accompaniment from Movement and V Recordings resident Stamina MC.
Our other drum & bass guests are the highly tipped Cyantific of Hospital Records alongside Critical Recordings head honcho Kasra. With Cyantific already having made their mark with their own unique brand of funk-fuelled d&b on Hospital this year, and Critical’s reputation rising fast due to regular A-list DJ support of recent tracks from the likes of XRS, Bulletproof and D-Kay, this back2back session is not to be missed.
In support are residents Trouble & Ref83, alongside MC Manikular on the mic and DJ Haste spinning classic tracks from across the eras of early hardcore and jungle.
As well as the increased drum & bass pressure, the hip-hop stakes are also being raised this time around. We welcome the Zebra Traffic Records crew to town, firstly with our resident lyricist Cappo previewing some exclusive cuts from his forthcoming album. Following him will be the very highly rated Diversion Tactics. Made up of two MCs and two DJ/producers (one of whom being ITF World Finalist Jazz-T), D.T. recently put out their debut album on Zebra Traffic to acclaim from the likes of Knowledge, HHC and The Scratch Perverts amongst others. Having also worked with J-Zone, Souls of Mischief and Huggy Bear, and being renowned for putting a healthy dash of black humour into their music, this is fresh British hip-hop at its best. As well as their performing some of their current tracks, Diversion Tactics will be dropping a few fresh cuts straight from the studio - all of this in a full live set on the night, with some slick turntablist skills on display too.
To add even more flavours to the melting pot of sounds, there’s also a live performance by 10-piece drum & bass and breaks band Keiretsu to get things warmed up nicely.
Further DJ support upstairs in the Red Room comes via the varied funky grooves of Soul:R’s Catalyst, plus XS.IF and The Reason Soundsystem spinning hip-hop beats old and new.
Extra attention is being paid to sound, light and visuals too, making this a summer party not to be missed. With the live acts kicking off just after 9pm, and food and drink available from 5pm in the courtyard, get down there early and feel the Repercussion…
