View Full Version : What's the difference between Jungle and D 'n' B?

This is an argument I've had with a few people.
I guess newer ravers might see a huge diffence between 1990's Drum 'n' Bass and the modern stuff. I don't. I think it's just evolution of one into the other!

Opened a can of worms now though.

Electro > Acid House > Hardcore > Jungle... blah blah blah..

I'm just gonna call it Electro! Hahaha! :D

there is a difference between the two but they all come under the urban umbrella of breakbeat terrorism :D

to me jungle uses more cut up amen beats with sub bass where as drum and bass is more flowing...

that's just my take on it though and it's pretty hard to explain without having audio to illustrate...

Jungle is supposed to have negative connotations. Whatever.

i like this one. I believe there is a difference, it doesnt mean its a bad thing thou!!

Jungle is definitely an era IMO, dont wanna be exact (cos you could argue about what years it was all day!) But when i started raving 96 , it was jungle, and somewhere shortly after that it became drumnbass :)

There are still tunes out which are dnb but have a definite jungle feel to them, its got the jungle sound to it! (for lack of a technical term!) It all mixes up good anyway!

Yea its all part of he music growing and changing - and its a good thing.

i think dnb has evolved from drum and bass and that they are 2 seperate genres, if thats what you want to call it. jungle has its own distinct drum patterns, theyre alot more busy and crazyer than the dnb we have now

if you listened to some proper old skool with crashing rums an rolls everywhere an then listened to snapshot (bleh) you'd know teh difference. i dont know much ol skool, or else id be able to give a better example

^ thats how I always saw things.

if you were using venn diagrams (GCSE maths anyone? lol) jungle would be a big circle, and inside it would be a smaller circle called drumnbass

ie. drumnbass is always jungle, but not all jungle can be called drumnbass

flame at will :o

But the main thing I worry about is parties advertising themselves as Drum 'n' Bass when there is plenty of Jungle, and Jungle parties not mentioning D 'n' B.
See what I mean?
Confused? :D

Any one see the documentary on the evolution of Soul music on Channel 4 last night?
Trevor 'Madhatter' Nelson presented it and talked about the Jungle scene saying how in 1995 it imploded and Garage erupted into 2Step, as if to say Jungle died!...

Blasphemy!

They need to get their facts straight! It's like when Mixmag said Drum 'n' Bass was dead! It ain't dead at all! It's healthier than ever! <_<

jungle is Drums, bass, sample/vocal thing. and fits a lot better with an mc rolling over the top. Its slower too and more about the drums and the bass!

drumnbass has drums and bass, but has a lot more going on in it. Loadsa different types of other sounds -guess its as much to do with different ways of producing...

At the end of the day clownstep doesnt exist, its just drumnbass but some ppl feel the need to categorise it, in order to make their love for dnb less embarrassing ;)

And you never heard any MC's talking about drum 'n' bass over jungle and vice versa?
Sure 'Jungle' was used more during 93-95 but I still think of it all as rave / hardcore...
Hardcore will never die.
